What does it mean when my sliding door gets harder to push every month?

A slider that gets a little harder to push every month is almost always telling you the rollers are wearing out, going out of adjustment, or seizing from corrosion. As the rollers flatten or lock up, more of the panel's weight drags on the track instead of rolling on it, so the effort climbs steadily rather than all at once.
The nuance: gradual stiffness points at rollers and track, but if the door also binds only at one corner, scrapes the frame head, or suddenly jumped from stiff to stuck, the frame itself may be out of square or the track may be crushed. That is a different repair, and forcing the panel in that condition can bend the track or damage the interlock and lock hardware.
Why it happens in Broward
Sliding glass panels ride on small steel or nylon rollers in a narrow track. Humidity and salt air in Broward — strongest near the coast and the Intracoastal, but present countywide — corrode roller bearings, axles and track surfaces. A corroded bearing stops spinning and starts skidding, and the skidding chews a groove into the track, which makes the next month worse than the last.
Grit is the other half of it. Sand, stucco dust, pollen and dried wind-driven rain collect in the track, then act like grinding paste under the rollers. Afternoon thunderstorms push water into the sill, and water plus grit plus a steel axle is a short road to a seized roller.
Age matters too. On many 1970s–1990s Broward sliders the original rollers are long past their service life, the aluminum track lip is worn thin, and the panel has dropped enough that the weatherstrip and interlock no longer meet cleanly. That is why a stiff door often shows up alongside a lock that needs a shove to engage and a sill that lets water in during a hard blow.
What you can check yourself
Vacuum and wipe the track
Vacuum the lower track and wipe it with a damp cloth. If the door glides noticeably better afterward, grit was part of the problem and the track is probably still intact.
Look down the track for a groove
Sight along the track lip in good light. A shiny worn channel, a flattened lip or a crushed section means the rollers have been dragging, and cleaning alone will not fix it.
Listen while you slide it
Grinding, squealing or a rhythmic click usually means a roller bearing has failed. Silence with heavy effort can mean the rollers are simply out of adjustment or the panel has dropped.
Check the lock and the gaps
If the lock no longer lines up, or you see daylight at the top or bottom corner, the panel has sagged or the frame has shifted. Note which corner — that detail speeds up the diagnosis.
Skip the grease
Heavy grease and oil collect sand and make the problem worse. A dry silicone lubricant on a clean track is the only thing worth trying at home.
When to call a pro
Call when cleaning does not help, when you hear grinding, when the lock will not engage without lifting the panel, or when the track is visibly worn or crushed. Those are signs of roller replacement, track repair or a panel that needs to be lifted out and re-hung — and sliding panels are heavy, awkward and easy to break. If water now gets past the sill in heavy rain, treat that as urgent too, since the sill pan and flashing may be involved.
If the frame is out of square, the glass is failing, or the door is old enough that parts are gone, replacement is usually the better path. In Broward, door replacement is permitted work: a permit comes from your city's building department (or Broward County Building Code Services in unincorporated areas), the product approval and attachment details go in with the permit, and a final inspection closes it out — verify the specifics with your city's building department, and check HOA or condo rules as well. What a pro will do
- Diagnose rollers versus frameWe check roller condition, track wear, panel square and lock alignment before recommending anything, so a repair is not sold where a replacement is needed or the reverse.
- Repair or re-hang where it makes senseWhere the frame and track are sound, new rollers, track repair and a properly set panel height restore the slide and the lock engagement.
- Replace with an HVHZ-approved sliderAll of Broward is in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so a replacement slider needs a Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval accepted for the HVHZ and rated for that opening's design pressure.
- Sill pan, flashing and installation to the approvalWe install to the approval's fastener pattern and anchor spacing and address the sill pan and flashing, which is where most slider water intrusion starts.
- Permits and inspectionsWe pull the permit when the work needs one, schedule inspections and see the permit closed out.
Related questions
- Can rollers be replaced without taking out the whole door?
- Usually yes — the moving panel is lifted out of the frame and the rollers are swapped at the bottom rail. It only becomes a full replacement when the track, frame or glass is also damaged.
- Does replacing a slider affect my insurance paperwork?
- An impact-rated, HVHZ-approved slider falls under the opening protection category of Florida's wind-mitigation form OIR-B1-1802, which a licensed inspector completes. Florida law requires insurers to offer discounts for wind-loss-mitigation features (s. 627.0629, Florida Statutes); protection is evaluated across all openings, and we do not perform the inspections.
- What drives the cost of fixing or replacing a sliding door?
- Panel size and weight, how many panels, access to the opening, the condition of the track and frame, the product approval and design pressure required, sill and flashing work, and the permit and inspection steps. We give a free estimate after looking at the actual opening — call (954) 906-1715.
- My slider also leaks during heavy rain. Same problem?
- Often related. A dropped panel no longer seals at the interlock and weatherstrip, and a clogged or damaged sill drain lets water back up into the room. Both get checked together.
- Do I need HOA approval as well as a permit?
- In Broward's many condo, townhome and HOA communities, association approval for exterior door changes is commonly required in addition to the city permit. Check your association's rules before scheduling work.
