Storm Panel Count & Storage Calculator

Enter each opening and see how many 12 in or 15 in panels it takes, the stock lengths, what the set weighs, how much room the stack needs, and how long two people take to put it up. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent.

Storm panels are the lowest-cost approved protection, and the trade-off is handling: every panel has to be stored, carried out and fastened before each storm. This calculator puts numbers on that so you can decide opening by opening.

A planning guide, not a quote. Counts assume standard stock widths and lengths; we measure on site and size the panels to the approved product.

1. Your openings

Measure the opening the shutter covers, in inches, outside the frame. Group identical openings with the quantity.

Material

Panels lap 1 in. Length is the opening height plus 4 in for the header and sill tracks, rounded up to the next stock length (24–120 in, in 12 in steps). Aluminum weighs about 1.1 lb and steel about 2.6 lb per square foot of panel.

Aluminum panels with tracks, retail, installed

$2,160

Weight is per panel at stock length; the stack is 12 in wide by the longest panel, about 1 in thick per 10 nested panels. Time assumes the tracks and studs are already mounted, 3–5 min per panel; add ladder time for upper floors.

Living with panels

  • Label everything. Mark each panel with its opening and store them in sets; the hardware (wing nuts, studs, bolts) in a labelled bag with each set.
  • Storage. Keep the stack flat or on edge in a dry spot, off the floor. Panels in a garage corner are the usual answer; at the sizes above, plan the space.
  • Two people. Long panels are awkward alone, and second-floor openings need a ladder. If that is not realistic for your household, accordions close from the ground. Compare with the Shutter Cost Comparison.
  • Approval. In Broward County (all of it in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone) panels and tracks need an HVHZ approval, usually a Miami-Dade NOA, and are installed to it. Keep the approval paperwork; a wind-mitigation inspector asks for it.
