Accordion vs. Aluminum Panel Shutters: Cost by Opening

List each opening by size, and see the square feet, the retail, installed figure for accordion shutters and for removable aluminum panels, how many panels you would store, and what each system asks of you when a storm is coming. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent.

Both systems protect an opening only when they are closed. Accordions stay mounted beside the opening and close in minutes; panels cost less and go up before each storm, so the right answer often differs from one opening to the next.

Retail figures, not a quote. We measure each opening on site and price it to the HVHZ-approved product that fits it.

1. Your openings

Measure the opening the shutter covers, in inches, outside the frame. Group identical openings with the quantity.

2. Panel width (for the panel count)
Storm panel stock width

Panels lap 1 in, so each added 12 in panel covers 11 in of width and each 15 in panel covers 14 in. The width does not change the cost figure, which is by square foot of opening.

Accordion or panels?

Accordion shutters

  • Permanently mounted beside the opening, so there is nothing to store.
  • Close and lock in minutes, from inside on many openings, by one person.
  • Can be locked from inside, which makes them usable as everyday security shutters.
  • Higher figure per square foot; the housings stay visible beside each opening.

Aluminum storm panels

  • Lowest figure per square foot; only the tracks and studs stay on the house.
  • About 27 panels need dry storage and have to be carried out, lined up and fastened before each storm, usually by two people.
  • Hard to put up on second-floor openings without a ladder or a lift.
  • Count them and plan the storage with the Storm Panel Calculator.

Good to know

  • Product approval. All of Broward County is in Florida's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so shutters need an approval for the HVHZ, usually a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA), and are installed exactly as that approval specifies. Many cities permit and inspect the installation.
  • Insurance. Approved protection on every opening, including entry doors and the garage door, is what the wind-mitigation form (OIR-B1-1802) records at its highest opening-protection level. Florida law requires insurers to offer discounts for mitigation features; how much is up to your insurer. Try the Wind Mitigation Credit Checker.
  • Mixing systems. Many homes put accordions on the openings they close most and panels on the rest. Price each opening the way it will actually be used.
